Ghana:Three Civilians Killed in Attack on Military Convoy in Ghana; Multiple Suspects Arrested

An armed assault on a military convoy in northern Ghana has left three civilians dead, according to official statements released on Monday, April 27. Security forces reported that seven of the attackers were killed during the response, while ten additional suspects have been taken into custody.

The convoy, transporting around 140 individuals, was traveling from Bawku to Bolgatanga when it came under fire in the Binduri area. Authorities say unidentified gunmen ambushed the convoy, prompting a military counter-operation that successfully repelled the attackers.

During follow-up operations, troops reportedly recovered weapons and ammunition from a suspect who had sought refuge in a mosque. Items seized included a G3 assault rifle, two loaded magazines, and a significant quantity of additional ammunition.

The military has urged the public not to interfere with ongoing security efforts and extended condolences to the families of those killed.

The attack occurred in a region long affected by instability, particularly around Bawku, where tensions rooted in longstanding chieftaincy disputes between the Kusasi and Mamprusi communities continue to fuel periodic violence. The area has experienced recurring cycles of clashes, curfews, and heavy security deployments, with both civilians and security personnel frequently targeted.

Despite repeated mediation attempts by government authorities and traditional leaders, the region remains one of Ghana’s most volatile areas, with insecurity continuing to disrupt daily life and cross-border economic activity.
